Beautiful Eyes

I met you one dark evening
Through friends who never knew.
I saw you as orange.
And you saw me as blue.
Though they didn’t really meet that day,
I saw your eyes and smiled.
Never quite expected
I’d end up with your child.

Through the years you’ve changed me,
What was shameful now a joy.
A life that once was empty
Now brought a baby boy.
The heart you love has opened
What I never knew was there.
Two girls followed after
I had learned to care.

The fourth, first planned, prepared and not.
We lost the second son.
And now I carry two for you
In numbers: one and one.
Your eyes light up my life
With quiet, warm-green glow.
And I, your love the purple,
Have written to tell you so.
